I have refrained from saying too much about the Jimmy Savile saga, not least because any time I mention anything to do with a BBC ‘crisis,’ out from the woodwork come those who continue to defend the Beeb’s false reporting and grossly unprofessional handling of the WMD dossier issue a decade or so ago.
It has been part of the continuing BBC rewriting of that period that former director general Greg Dyke (who was i/c mishandling when it became a crisis) and former (I think) executive Kevin Marsh appear able to parade themselves as independent expert commentators on BBC handling issues. All we need now is Andrew Gilligan and Richard Sambrook to be hired as a crisis management hit team for the new DG and the nonsense will be complete.
It may be no surprise to you that I find it hard to forgive the above mentioned false reporting and unprofessional handling, given the consequences of the reporter’s behaviour, and given the scale of unprofessionalism exposed at the Hutton Inquiry, usually overlooked in the one-sided misreporting the issue continues to attract.
Yet despite my criticisms of the BBC then, and my occasional challenges of the rewriting of history now, I remain a supporter of the BBC – anyone who isn’t should take a look at Fox News to be reminded of what we neither need nor want – and therefore I thought I might throw in a bit of support for the current director general George Entwistle and his fellow executives struggling and failing to calm the storm.
They are being subject to the consequences of something I know from personal experience is a difficult media mood to deal with – that in which an old prism has been replaced by a new one, and the mood generated by the old one is forgotten. The old prism was that Jimmy Savile was a lovable and much loved TV personality who put bums on sitting room armchairs, raised millions for good causes and made kids’ dreams come true, along the way becoming a friend of Royals, top politicians and sundry other establishment figures.
The new prism, clear as I look across the train at a Metro headline ‘Now Savile accused of molesting the dead’, is that Savile was a disgusting pervert and it must have been obvious to everyone and how the hell could he get away with it for so long?
When a prism changes so violently, there is little sympathy for those who are having to deal with the fall out. When David Kelly killed himself, the new prism was one through which a biased media – not least the BBC – viewed every action prior to his death as though it should have been informed by the subsequent knowledge that he had taken his own life.
Likewise the questions put to Entwistle by MPs and by front pages screaming at him come from the prism that says ‘given what we know now, what kind of incompetent are you that you didn’t know then?’ But the same question could be put to the Queen and her courtiers, who agreed to his knighthood, Prince Charles and Princess Diana were she here (and my God, was her life not full of changing media prisms?), Margaret Thatcher, the NHS and sundry other institutions just as gullible as the one which made Savile famous.
Let’s also understand that a lot of the criticism of the BBC has less to do with the issue, serious though it is, and everything to do with usual critics rejoicing at the size of the stick with which they can beat old Auntie.
None of this minimises the scale of the wrongdoing by Savile and the need to get to the heart of why he was allowed to get away with it for the whole of his life. But there is now a nastiness to the Beeb-baiting from MPs and media that risks getting out of hand. I simply don’t agree with John Simpson that this is the biggest crisis for the BBC in his fifty years working for them. I felt that statement was just part of the phenomenon of modern journalism that insists everything has to be a superlative.
Provided the right decisions are taken and properly communicated now -big ifs on current form I agree – I am not even sure this yet represents a full blown crisis. That it represents a full blown frenzy is certain. But that is not the same thing.
The best thing Chris Patten and George Entwistle and their top teams could do is get together, decide to ignore the noise, ask themselves the difficult questions that remain outstanding, answer them and act accordingly.
In short, they need a new prism. At the risk of sparking ‘crisis what crisis?’ headlines, it should start from the premise that this is not yet a major crisis. It is the handling of it, and the failure to push back on a hostile agenda being set by others with their new prism, that risks turning a bad situation into a 24 carat crisis. It is still not too late to stop that happening.
Claret on white is VERY difficult for those of us of a certain age to read. It may be artistically trendy and reflect loyalty to Blackburn Rovers. But that’s not relevant for anyone wanting to read your blog (with minimal effort);
Is it not also the case that while some people are “rejoicing at the size of the stick with which they can beat old Auntie”, they are thus able to escape the uncomfortable glare of the spotlight and turn it on someone else for a while? Remember the “Good day to bury bad news” fiasco?
Any organisation employing thousands will have at least one representative of each type of deviate behaviour amongst its employees. The committee members questioning the DG of the BBC yesterday exhibited their ignorance of how large organisations are managed with distinct lines of responsibility
Expective a new DG of some four weeks standing to know the ins and outs of what happened wihin the BBC some 40 years ago was nothing but grandstanding. Surely the time for criticism and allocation of fault comes when ALL the relevant facts are known. How many other news organisations in the World allow one of its current affairs programme to investigate another?
The usual critics of the BBC duly popped out of their burrows and waved their sticks crying for heads to roll. Would they like and UK version of Fax News or the “pap” served up as World News by other US TV news programmes?
I don’t agree with this. Many lives have been ruined here. That’s what makes it the biggest crisis.
Why was Kelly’s body moved?
When things go wrong it’s very easy to find fault if you start with the assumption that the person in charge must be omniscient. As you say, there are a lot of people who failed to see anything wrong
And there are a lot of people on a spectrum of knowing what was going on with Saville, suspecting, or having leads they could have followed. The prevailing story was that Saville was good, if eccentric; when a story was as strongly entrenched as his was it seems to take a lot for people to go against it.
I wonder if Entwhistle’s main problem will be that he is a BBC insider. I understand his point that when he was told of a threat to his schedules he decided to wait to see if this materialised (there is a fine but important line between being in overall charge but not influencing programme decisions). But in the current climate it will be hard for the BBC to shift perceptions and show it has moved on with a veteran in charge – harsh as that is.
I worked on a programme at the BBC some years ago at White City. I was only there for a few months, I was not staff. However I noticed that the BBC is very atomised internally. Each production team is like a little family and gets on with its production quite independently of all else that is going on.
This allied to the totally different social climate in the 70s and the 80s, when pedophilia was not something people ever thought about, explains to me how Jimmy Savile got away with his activities.
Today we have a government full of people wishing to attack the BBC and this government also has friends who own newspapers and other media companies all with an agenda to do down the BBC. I think the Savile story is being used by them.
It looks like maybe Savile’s worst crimes might have been committed in hospitals. There is an argument that if hospitals are made very dependent on funding from charities, then important people in those charities become very powerful.
If the hospitals were properly funded then maybe they would have felt less in awe of Savile and thus reduced his power a little.
Some of the noise that the DG and Governors need to ignore is coming from HMG. Others at the BBC have previously had to contend with barracking from Westminster, perhaps intended as constructive criticism, but looking and sounding to all outside it as bullying. There is no small irony here that the Newsnight editor may also have construed the ‘help’ and ‘focus’ from his own senior management team as pressure. When a prism focuses light on a subject, people get burnt.
History isn’t being kind to the beeb. First encounter with the beeb as a child, as many, was with Blue Peter. Interesting case. Their presenters, it seems, were paid pennies as the in front of screen talent. Noakes has occasionally spoken out about it, when he laid his life on the line for some of the stunts he was asked to do, with doubtful insurance cover.
The beeb hadn’t seemed to get over their necessary part in WWII propaganda, and return to just a simple broadcaster. Through my life they seem to live in a state funded bubble, with an unhealthy low turnover of staff, boots being eventually filled when ultimately necessary.
But yes, things are different there now, to a certain extent, and are not so much like a fickle old spinster aunt, who could turn on someone on a sixpence. Just ask Bernard Braden, Percy Thrower, Morecambe & Wise and etc. etc. Well, that is could have been asked if they were still around.
…and furthermore Alastair, ref. your twitter – yes, Croydon, with all the shoe and trainers shops. It is the home of the Croydon Facelift after all, well known for it, which was promoted by Mrs Becks, even though she was not from Croydon, but still. Have lived in Croydon, loved living there and still love the place. Hope you had a good day there.
And what is going on with Disqus at the moment? Had to log on from their site for here. Technology ey?
Where are you suddenly again Alastair? Hope disqus with what is going on in the US is not playing up due to high powered games going on there.
Anyway, have talked about my mate Robbie that runs the Kings Head pub young successfully in Capel Hendre, but his dad has recently retired so his pub is up for sale in a brilliant part of Wales, just down the hill from the border of the Brecon Beacons national park, just outside the extraordinary town of Llandeilo, with its magical river salmon atlantic totally flowing Tywi/Towy. His dad hasn’t had any bites, so I thought I’d help. and post his dads pub here, since it is now due to auction, links,

Anyone see Ed Balls on Andrew Neil just now?
I consider Ed Balls either an economic simpleton, or a ruthless sleazy politician – ie either he has no clue about economics, or he does have a clue but throws it out for political expediency – I expect the latter.
I don’t want to be too harsh, in fact I want to offer some support, but lets get it right, Andrew Neil is smarter than Balls and gave him his usual kicking. Neil is also assisted by the fact that he can use truth and economic fact, whereas Balls has to use political spin.
Nonetheless Balls acquitted himself reasonably well and deserves credit for being the highest ranking politician with the, ahem, balls to go on the Andrew Neil show.
I don’t think Balls actually told any lies or overdid it with the spin, he congratulated the good figures but said they weren’t good enough, and that there needed to be a plan to improve them and didn’t seem to be. Quite true I’d say, though you got the impression he was floundering somewhat, as you’d expect as Labour have bet the house on the Tories not getting growth. The tories are winning with the public on every other measure ie crime, welfare etc. I suspect labour could do ok yet as we are likely to have growth bump around the bottom so may have a few more quarters of contraction between now and 2015.
Where is Michele by the way? I’m finding it nigh on impossible to start a fight with anyone in her absence!
Just take note, her absence has nothing to do with me…are you listening Ehtch?
OK. So the BBC was wrong in your case as proven by Hutton judgement. But now you want to defend them. Here’s 1 for you:
In a BBC QT from Belfast in June/July 2010, Dimbleby decided to ask Shaun Woodward MP about his £43 claim for taxi in
1 year (I think). It was not an audience question. This is the same Shaun Woodward who opted not to take
his ministerial salary in the last Labour Govt. because he’s married to
someone from Sainsbury family (I think) who is very wealthy.
Woodward, for an intelligent man, actually tried to answer the question & of course failed.
In
contrast, Dimbleby EASILY spent more than £43 on just that trip to
Belfast, also on public money. But alas, we never get to know about
Dimbleby’s expenses or remuneration. And this is someone who has been at
the BBC since the 1960s, so almost 50 years. If you don’t like a
politician, you only have to wait 5 years & you can vote them out.
But, with presenters like Dimbleby & Saville, you have to wait for
them to die before you find out about their activities. And then, it’s
too late.
Let’s remember that all of the spade work for the so-called expenses scandal was done by the Telegraph. The BBC decided to give it so much more mileage. Why?
I also remember a particularly unpleasant exchange on Radio 5 live between Phil Woolas & Stephen Nolan. None of the MPs wilfully set out to cheat on expenses. But the way the BBC blew that up was unbelievable.
I’m sure there are ex-Labour MPs especially those who lost their seats due to the “expenses scandal” are now enjoying the Saville/Newsnight scandal. I know I am.
Many people think the BBC is either left-wing or right-wing. I don’t. I think the BBC plainly hates Britain & British people & is doing all it can to ensure that society & communities are divided & stay divided.
Regarding the new Disqus format that was introduced on this site some weeks ago. It would seem from some comments I’ve just read on the Telegraph blogs site, that the same is trying to be introduced on that Disqus powered site too.
It’s back to the old format at the moment, but must have been tried out earlier on, judging by the comments. It’s the ‘thumbs’ up/down system they don’t like. One commenter wrote that it was ‘horribly Daily Mail’. That says it all imo.
Now that number 10 has been mentioned and I am sorry to say We vote for them if you think that that is not a 24 carat crisis. Well I do not know what is.
Yes? What is it? What can I do for you Liberalreform, spit it out, stop gargling? You name it, I’ll sing it.
I’d be interested in your comments on the following:

Just to say, Mr Campbell, that it is good to see that your capacity for distortion, blaming the other guy, smearing anyone who disagrees with your distorted view of what constitutes honourable government remains undiminished along with your breathtaking insouciance.
It is clear that anyone having dealings with the Labour Party needs a good sense of smell!
Never mind Michael Fish, think beeb is getting this weekend’s weather wrong. It is sleeting here aleady in the cold arctic wind and could turn to snow no doubt. Only 500ft up amsl (above mean sea level) in SW Wales, so look out north of England and East Anglia, let alone Scotland. Told you last week be prepared – many farmers have been saying it, they are the true weathermen, and they don’t need a supercomputer, just their eyes and bones.
His dad’s pub has an interesting name – The College Inn – which derives from a College of Druids from distant past. Yes, druids were active in this area, say two thousand years ago, before Merlin and all that, until the Normans came, 1066 and all that.
Bit of history for you.
Oliver Reed from Wimbledon, not a Womble, which the old infantile beeb was confused with. My favorite film of his, in Canada British Columbia or somewhere, could be up river Seattle,

Let us start a fight then reaguns, umm, umm, I know, you are an importer of eastern european prositutes – you seem like that with your attitude with your posts! Or is that too cutting? How about, your mother was slack, no, too base. I know, come outside and square up, I don’t like the wotsit of your mush, yes, that is better. Oh yes, the “gib” of your unseen face, outside now.
Bring your boxing gloves with you into the car park reaguns, I’ll be waiting, but don’t take too long, it is well parky out here today, and I am freezing my balls off. : )))

Nice one. Thanks for the link Dave Simons, tidy.
Should put that myth to bed around here, methinks.
Better mention Rita Tushingham and Jane Merrow in the two above, and Julia Foster (mam of Ben Fogle from beeb telly!?!) too at start of second one, or I will get in trouble….
Go on Ehtch, think reaguns is pining for Michele so perhaps you could find a rap version of michelle my belle!
Thanks Ehtch but its just not the same 🙂
Heh heh heh, 1 like, 3 dislikes, 0 rebuttals 🙂
First up “without confidence and certainty there can be no real growth. ” No. Real economies do not depend on confidence. Germany has a great car industry because they build great cars, nothing to do with confidence. People spend because they have money, not because they have confidence they will one day have money.
Claim 1: It wasn’t the debt that was the problem, it was the deficit. Our debt, at around 40% of gdp, meant that we were less well off as a country than if it was say 10%, or if we were a net creditor nation, but it didn’t spell disaster, many countries have operated for years with a similar debt. It is also correct to say that Labour reduced the debt as a percentage of GDP.
The problem was the deficit, at 11% or whatever that was going to lead us to ruin, ie in a few years the debt would be a lot more than 40% and be unserviceable. The labour claim for a couple of years has been that the 11% came from the bank bailout, even though the deficit was 155 billion and the bank bailout was 75 billion and only lasted 1 year!
Ed Balls accepted yesterday on Andrew Neil, and before that on Andrew Marr, that the real structural deficit was 5.2%.
The biggest problem is that Balls, Brown etc claim to be Keynesians as do the likes of Paul Krugman. But Keynes said to run surpluses in good times, so that you can afford to stimulate in bad times. No neo keynesian ever calls for less spending though, find me a time when Krugman or Balls ever called for less spending. Keynes did.
Claim 2. Labour inherited a deficit, indeed they did. He says they inherited 3.9% deficit in 1997 and turned it into 2.1% by 2008.
Not true. The independent institutions now say it was 5.2%.
Also, what really happened is that Major had the recession and Black Wednesday disaster in the early 90s, following the economic mismanagement of Lawson and Lamont. Then Ken Clarke came in and did a superb job (even though I dislike him for other reasons) and had the economy growing and the deficit falling year on year. Brown followed his policies and actually got us into surplus by 1999-2000! If Labour were economists, not politicians, Keynesians not Neo-Keynesians, here we would have stayed. And to think they slag off businessmen for being short termist!
Claim 3. This is half right. Our interest rates are not low because the markets think Osborne is the Iron Chancellor. They are not low for the reasons this guy gives either though, they are low because the bank of england can perpetually print money to buy them (ignoring the incredible damage that will do to us soon enough just as it did in the 1970s.)
Well! While I stand by my opinion as expessed in my remarks above, I confess to surprise and grudging admiration that you didn’t simply censor my remarks. Perhaps you might yet convince me that your reign at number 10 wasn’t all bad and that the process of government hasn’t been irretrievably tarnished by your actions. Since you are prepared to host a point of view which runs directly contrary to your own (as far as Hutton is concerned) I perceive perhaps a tiny glimmer of hope that some self awareness remains.
Signing off in a slightly less cynical mood than this morning….
David
Aren’t all car parks a bit parky?
Germans build great cars reaguns!?! Mr Rolls and Mr Royce taught them everything they don’t know. It was Westmister that fecked it up for R and R, especially the tory right, with their warped empire ways.
R & R would be the Porsches of today, if it wasn’t for those Eton Oxbridge myopic numbnuts.
Poor reaguns, do I feel for him? NOOOO! Get over it you pussy, are you a man or a mouse? The sado.
Anyway, as you say, said song, but from someone else,

Any good? I think it is, but that is moi. : )
ow, and there was me looking forward to some fisty-cuffs. I will have to kick my dog instead then. Well, not actually kick him, just call him some names, and then run when he tries to bite me, which he always does. My doggie doesn’t like me calling him names. If I kicked him, he would kill me, no doubt about it. DOWN BOY! – yes, I am talking about you, have some doggie biscuits…
I’ll give you a buttal reaguns – Andrew Neil is brainwashed London beeb, how’s that reaguns?
And reaguns, could it be possible Balls is keeping his cards close to his chest? To be a high up government minister in power in this country is not rocket science, you just have to be a in touch minister, which I think Balls can be. That was the genius of Prescott for god sakes man god sakes ey what ey godsakes, what he said, yes ey what’s for tea wife.
My impression of Prescott there in the end there, if you did not notice. : ) Calm down John, or you will choke on your food. : ))) only joking about Prezza, but I know he is ok about it, I hope! : )

29-28 to Scarlets, interesting match. Five points to Scarlets, one to Edinburgh, even though the Scarlets were reffed off the park with penalties, but still got basic four tries. BIZZARE! we managed not to get robbed tonight, just.
Good voice, it’s not you singing in a fake French accent is it Ehtch? I’m sure Michele would love you for it lol!
Merci buckets. Moi?? non-non-non, it vas non mee, ma cheriee, honest butt! : )
Depends, if it is full of horses from the pink brigade getting ready to gallop to hunt for a fox, like a bunch of mad fools, it will be bit stable then, or something! : )
That Jane Merrow driving chase was filmed at the Crystal Palace driving circuit of then, which is now the national athletics track, where the old Hyde Park 1851 British Exhibition glasshouse of Prince Albert ended up being moved to, before it burnt down, a few decades ago.
Brilliant short clip here of Crystal Palace as a motor race track, in the very last days of hooray henries from Mayfair in their motors, from about 1971,

Vettel is looking good, won, Hamilton fourth in the call centre, also known as India. And I am about to watch these complete and utter loons on their motorised pushbikes from Philip Island, from Oz.
My favorite vid of a mad motorcyclist, followed by Bathurst Oz with cars, from the 1960s, watch the Morris brit Mini Cooper S winning in 1966, it is a classic clip, driven by the Finn, Rauno Aaltonen, but on Vimeo,

Remember taking my chip off the old block, generally know as my daughter, karting, in that excellent track they have in that leisure park just outside Tenby, near the village of St. Florence.
She was only fourteen then, and to say she drove like a rat up a drainpipe would be an understatement. But I won, but I suppose I have more experience of driving four wheels like a loon, the scenery damaged over the years can confirm it. She does scuba diving these days – hope she dives safe… We had a round of golf on the nine hole link they have there afterwards, I won too, just.
Karting as like here, at said location, near Tenby, Pembrokeshire, SW Wales,

When I drove those briggs and stratton go-karts, I kept my foot planted right down on the throttle, and with the left foot brake, used it to swing the back end round on corners. The discs were red hot and steaming at the paddock at the finish, with the young bloke there scratching his head and saying “oh fuck”. Must have hit at least 35mph on the straight there. Not bad for a lawnmower engine, ey?
Left foot braking as here – went tumbling vaulting over a hedge into a farmers field in a mini when I was eighteen driving a mini with passion, when I hit that ice patch in November, and at several future occasions. War stories. As here with left foot braking, Jezza Cee,
