First, before getting onto the subject in the headline, a restatement of the basic message in my excessive tweets re last night’s Paralympics opening ceremony. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. Danny Boyle’s Olympics ceremony made me proud to be British, and proud to be Northern. Last night’s made me proud to be a citizen of a country and a world of real values and where the power of the human spirit remains the greatest force on earth.
Back to more mundane matters … I haven’t written much about Julian Assange. He doesn’t do it for me either way, I’m afraid, so I am neither with those who see him as some kind of freedom-fighting Messiah against the evils of power, in particular American power; nor do I see him as some kind of peculiar evil. I think the world probably talks about him too much already, but not least because some of you keep asking me to, I will say a few words.
The WikiLeaks story was an important and interesting one. But like all important and interesting stories in the 24 hour media age, it got so much ventilation that it moved from story to soap opera, and that is kind of where we are with it now. There was some bad stuff in the cables. There was some irresponsible handling of it, not least by Assange, some good handling of it by some in the media, some sensible reaction, some less so. But it probably wasn’t worth quite the fuss it generated for so long.
As for the soap element, well in the era of Downtown Abbey, we have already had the Assange stately home as a place of refuge all those long and wintry doorsteps ago, and now we have the Ecuadorean Embassy. And of course we have had the one magic ingredient that every 24 hour media soap story needs, not just in the tabloids … sex. In Sweden. Now you’re talking.
On a plane yesterday, with a few hours to kill, I picked up a few news magazines at the airport. British, American, French, German. He was in all of them, not huge, not as he was in the early days of this saga, but in there, the shot of him on the Embassy balcony speaking to ‘supporters’ and police.
Whether Time or Newsweek, The Economist or The Week, Le Point or Der Spiegel, they know a picture. So does he. So the sober tie and the blue shirt; the notes; the cops in the foreground worrying about a sudden dash to the airport … these were not stories about sex, this was a story about freedom and power. He was fighting for freedom. Against power.
The Ecuadorean flag and the Embassy symbol showed he had new friends in the fight too. We have heard a lot about them, and a lot from them. Indeed in some of the magazines there was more interest in President Rafael Correa than there was in Mr Assange. Politics in Latin America, as elsewhere, is in a state of flux. Other powerful leaders are ill. Some are in political trouble. There is an opportunity, and he is taking it, meanwhile getting himself on the side of the small against the big, the little freedom fighter standing up to the mighty evil that is America. With an election a few months away.
If I had ended that sentence about the mighty evil with the word ‘Sweden’, you would have thought I had lost the plot. Yet Assange’s continued presence inside the London Embassy compound rests on the notion that Sweden, which strikes me as something of a fair play kind of place, would not play fair if he landed on their soil to face up to the allegations of sexual crimes that have been made against him.
For his own reasons, Correa prefers to put to one side the sex allegations part of the soap. And for his reasons, Assange wants to do the same. They are partners in this whole endeavour, with different things to gain.
But if Assange were to stand back from it all, which I know must be difficult, and analyse it from the perspective of the values and philosophy said to have bought WikiLeaks into being, what in reality would he conclude? Surely that if his burning light is freedom of information, and openness to the channels of power so that people know what is being done in their name, he should not be there, allowing himself to be used in the way Correa is using him.
This is a President whose government has shut down 19 radio stations and a TV channel while developing their own state run media empire. A President who sees a critical column not as part of the rough and tumble of political debate, but the inspiration for a libel suit which led to a journalist and newspaper directors being jailed and fined tens of millions of pounds, a decision reverted only after a diplomatic backlash, but which still saw the journalist fleeing the country. It is a President who fought and won a referendum to get greater powers in the courts. And meanwhile as Correa stands up to help Assange avoid a trip to Sweden, he may well be poised to reverse a decision to extradite a businessman wanted in … Belarus.
Somewhere along the way, I think Mr Assange’s moral compass has gone askew, and Mr Correa is, for now at least, the one who is gaining the most.
The one thing that might move me to have a bit of respect and admiration for Mr Assange would be if he were to come out and say that a country like this, with a president with these views on media freedom, is not one from which he can take support and sustenance. Sweden, on the other hand, has a reputation for being fair and just, and he should let their system look at the allegations that have been made.
Then one day, as one of these magazines reported him as saying this is all having a bad effect on his children, he might be able to see them. Meantime, I think the time to leave the Ecuadorean chapter of the soap has been reached, and the Stockholm episode should begin in earnest. I suspect if it did, the Washington chapter would never be written, because Mr Assange would either be punished for crimes he is shown to have committed, or allowed to go free. And I suspect deep down, both Correa and Assange think that too.
If the US-UK extradition treaty of 2003 was not so one sided, and distrusted, and we could understand the motivation TB had in forcing it on to the books: if Assange were to be visited by Swedish police in UK to further their investigations, and were to be subsequently charged, that would be a good starting point to commence your comments.
UK police are frequently reported as travellimg round the world to interview witnesses and suspects: why are Swedish policeso precious?
Assange, like Armstrong on his bike, you tend to ask what is true or false.
He is an interesting character Assange, grabbed the modern age’s abilty to get information, as if a tin of beans off a supermarket shelf.
I sense establishment hysteria, in their old world warped world, is playing this and wringing it dry as much as they want. As what happened to that french fella in New York with that maid, you could say, which we read between the lines that there was “nothing much in it”.
Another watch and shoot online situation it is, in this new modern world we inhabit, with hyper-exponentially rising communicating abilities.
Get a grip, you world establishment!
Excellent. More analysis like this please, fair and comprehensive.
I too could not make up my mind about Assange but agree that siding with Ecuador vs Sweden does not do the supposed cause of wikilieaks and freedom of information much good.
I don’t have strong opinions either way on Mr Assange but I loved the instant comment on twitter as he stood on the balcony making his speech – He’s not the Messiah, He’s a Very Naughty Boy. Genius!
Isn’t every country entitled to have its own laws so long as they have some rationale for whatever they are and haven’t been tailored to fit selected crimes?
WTH does Assange think he is to demand to be visited?
Why should Sweden change its laws for anyone for such ludicrous hysterical reasons about such tacky crimes?
Wouldn’t a sane adult want their name cleared of such banality?
Is he simply embarrassed at the details and thinks it will all go away, or has it become a handy smokescreen to deflect from him ever mentioning Bradley Manning?
Wouldn’t anyone want to get it explained if it was a fit-up?
Of course it’s possible that the two women Wiki volunteers are really CIA agents but isn’t it just as possible they aren’t?
Two silly women admired their boss by his ‘heroic’ reputation (although they must have heard of Manning’s abandonment) and had, in separate locations, consensual safe sex and went to sleep, feeling safe in the idea that Mr Nice Guy was in their home.
He would have been aware, by their precautions beforehand that they were safe partners for him but he overrode all their feelings by having non-‘safe’ (uninformed as such) repeat sex with them.
We’re post-80s, it does need to be explored whether he lied, said he was equipped and had ‘consensual sex’ again but was found out afterwards, whether he did not lie but used force or whether there were no words, no lies, no force, ‘just’ two continuations of GG’s ‘sex game’ and the ensuing spoiling of both women’s confidence in their HIV status.
Would either situation have been reported to Sweden’s Police if each woman had not found out about the other (which I believe ‘only’ happened due to their both taking STD tests).
It’s often been said that he would be safer from extradition in Sweden than here if USA did demand it.
I wonder whether he’s apologised, even once, to Bradley Manning.
As for his kind words to Ecuadorians, words fail for once ๐
The two core problems are that USA cannot extradite Assange from UK because the request would be denied on the grounds that he is likely to be harmed, tortured or killed in USA. Sweden, on the other hand, have been known to hand people over for rendition without an actual ‘extradition’ request; therefore for USA to wait until Assange gets to Sweden makes sense from their perspective, as they can avoid having to a) Formalise a request, and b) Divulge their case against him.
The sex allegations must be answered, there’s no doubt about that, but Sweden have broken with their own established tradition by refusing to interview him outside Sweden and have repeatedly refused to guarantee Assange won’t be delivered to the USA by extradition or otherwise. Further clouding theissue are the quite genuine questions about the allegations themselves, and the political motivations for re-opening the case after the first prosecutor found no grounds to proceed. Given one of the women’s political leanings and published manifesto, questions must be asked.
The two women dropped the charges on the advice of the Swedish prosecution. Did you miss that?
The investigation was reopened as a result of a politician interfering in the judicial process and against the wishes of the two women. Did you miss that?
The Swedes have sent inspectors to question a suspected murderer in Serbia but won’t travel to London despite repeated requests in the last two years, most lately by the Ecuadorian embassy. Instead they twisted the system to issue a IAW. Sweden only recently gave their reason: they want the prestige of Assange being questioned there. Did you miss that?
Your lack of knowledge of the political machinations and the timeline of dubious events is breathtaking.
Very good article. I must say I hope Assange sorts his problems out. But meanwhile I am in Salt Lake City trying to figure what makes mormons tick. I suspect the USA is going thave a mormon president soon. Oi vey!
It is puzzling that you fail to see the woods for the trees
The Assange story is not about Ecuador it is about
1. the Swedish authorities insisting on questioning him in Sweden (note no charges have been laid) and not in the UK and
2.why the USA has not sought Assange’s extradition from the UK under the discredited one sided extradition treaty
On the subject of the Paralympics OC, staggering!
We’ve come a long way since just the short time ago that the statue of pregnant Alison Lapper was on the 4th plinth. I’d not realised until now that she’d actually been abandoned by her own mother.
Assange is a weird bloke. I wouldn’t trust him as far as I could throw him. There was nothing of great interest in those Wikileaks. No big secrets were divulged. I think he may be being used, willingly or unwillingly as a tool (appropriately enough) to give those that have power the excuse or reason to tighten-up or further regulate what gets onto the internet.
Meanwhile, there is a British woman also holed-up in the Ecuadorean Embassy in London, who has a much more interesting tale to tell. We haven’t as yet heard anything about her in the MSM and I doubt that we will.
Freedom vs power.
Ecuadorean embassy in London has given asylum to Julian Assange.
He, of course, is the founder of WikiLeaks which has leaked secret government documents.
Arresting Mr Assange in the embassy would set a dangerous international precedent.
Diplomats are supposed to have immunity.
Diplomatic and Consular Premises Act 1987 speaks only of public safety and national security.
De-recognation of a mission is possible, but it must be consistent with international law.
In this case with the 1961 Vienna convention on diplomatic relations.
Embassies should be inviolable premises. Only the head of a mission can give permission to enter.
Our dear neighbour Sweden has a long history of collaboration with the US behind the scenes despite of progressive rhetoric.
I would not trust Sweden a bit.
Ecuador could give Mr Assange a diplomatic passport.
Ecuador could give him diplomatic status. Diplomats are immune for procecution.
Diplomatic vehicles are immune for search.
And diplomatic bags shall not be opened or detained.
Recent revelations about the New York Times show that we need people like Julian Assange.
NYT has collaborated with CIA and the Obama administration.
It has also given a veto to the Obama campaign on quotes.
With 96% of the worldยดs media in the hands of globalists, we should celebrate freedom!
Met two mormon US missionaries in one of my local towns, Llaneli, West Wales, about fifteen years ago. In their suits and ties, both in their early twenties, and had an interesting chat, if a slightly bizarre experience. They just wanted me to pray with them, there and then, and I just said, only Sundays for me lads.
But very civil and respectable they were, but quite a turnaround from when welsh chapels used to send missionaries to slave farms in the US and the Caribbean a couple of hundred years ago, you could say. Pretty ironic.
Not forgetting Bradley Manning, who is the most in schtuck with this wikileaks affair, Gilliebc.
And I think you have hit the nail right on the head with regards internet regulation reasons by Big Brother.
All very logical, but I don’t think human beings necessarily are. They may have flashes of decency which they cannot live up to all the time.
Frankly, if I’d sinned so heavily against Uncle Sam I would look for any port in a storm – whether it was against my principles or not.
I sincerely hope you’re wrong. Though Gore Vidal predicted Obama would be a one-term president. Bloody weird country.
Yes, that was a funny comment. Someone elsewhere also pointed out that he, JA also looks a little bit like (the late) John Inman.
‘Not forgetting Bradley Manning’ quite right Ehtch. I suspect that poor young man will be a basket case before they are done with him.
I am pleased and relieved that thus far TPTB have not broken international law by entering the Ec. Embassy to arrest JA. It would, as you point out Olli, be a very dangerous international precident to set. However, the PTB clearly see themselves as above any law e.g. the cold-blooded murder of the heads of state of other countries who dare to stand in the way of their globalist aims and ambitions.
Great speech from Romney last night. If only it were one of his lieutenants, such as Ryan, Christie or Rubio this might be a close race. As things stand one of them will probably win in 2016 which means America will probably miss out on a great president, Hillary Clinton. I think they missed a good un in John McCain too.
Of course, speeches smeeches. Obama makes a good speech too and I’m sure he’ll respond in kind at the Democratic convention. The big shame is that neither man can carry out half of the rhetoric.
There has not actually been a ‘threat’ to storm the embassy.
A clumsy speaker (a fellow Yorkshirean) has merely pointed out that immunity can be revoked. It is merely a fact, nothing more, that it is in the gift of the host country.
The Ecuadorians have twisted that in to being a ‘threat’.
In flailing around and tossing their ringlets (Scarlett-style) the Ass and his hosts are all acting as if they need to lie down in a cool room with wet cloths over their faces.
One wonders whether these people are of stunted growth, all stuck at about five?
If they are like children, you are like a screeching little monkey who flings her feces.
“I would not trust Sweden a bit.”
But Finland trusts them to be their proxy in diplomatic matters with Ecuador.
There’s no Embassy, simply a Consulate in Finland, perhaps you know whether that’s a long-term economy measure or something else?
Whilst anyone would agree with your ‘ ….we should celebrate freedom!…..’ we would mostly have our own interpretation (spin if you like) re with whom to side in any single topic and while all this could be an awful tactic and fiction set up by USA surely JA could blow it apart if what happened in Sweden can be better explained than it so far has been.
We should celebrate the freedom of two women who, as far as we know, are simply responsible adults that need to take an irresponsible flagrant abuser to task. If they and they alone feel they are being exploited by any authorities I’m sure they would have said so by now.
It’s farcical, his children must be cringeing.
You’re just another drooling Feminist imbecile. The dignity of the mighty Anglo-Saxons has been undermined by rotten Feminist women like you. Women should have never been given the vote in the UK. They certainly haven’t earned it.
What’s the story re the British woman Gbc?
Well, Michele (she said folding her arms and leaning on the garden fence in a gossipy manner. That’s me I am referring to btw) Her name is Andrea Davison. Apparently she had acquaintances with people in very high places and positions. Some say she is a whistle-blower, with some big beans to spill. There is some info. on Google about her. I’m not sure what to make of it tbh. There, as always are two sides to every story.
Nothing of great interest! The revelation that Uncle Sam did not revere certain Arab despots, whom they supported for their own reasons may have sparked the whole Arab Spring.
I wouldn’t be surprised if you, yourself, Alistair was a little nervous about leakage and this coloured my reading of your article.
Phew – must be gettimg crowded in there. How do they get to do any ordinary diplomaic work! Anyone know if there’s a garden?
Ah – I googled the name.
I wrote a post when I first looked in yesterday afternoon but must have not found the ID-verification box so it disappeared instead of posting up.
No conspiracy there, just me not remembering the system and to scroll for the box at first post of the day ……..
It had been in response to your and Ehtch’s hand-wringing about Big Brother and the internet ever being controlled.
We have to face up to the fact that some use it as a power for bad as well as good. Restrictive – bad, humane restrictions – good (in my book).
I would welcome controls on corrupt influencers such as Alan Ayling (k/a Lake) who funded and organised the EDL – always via the internet and he was able to be anonymous for quite a few years. I’d be pro- controls on people like him (as well as realising he’ll simply spring up again elsewhere under another assumed name but heck, any disturbance of his organisational ability would be better than none).
The net’s the conduit for other negativity about a few people that get together in private, what stops you suspecting neo-Nazism underlies the hot gossip about them and ropes in the eager ‘worriers’? Doesn’t it have a ring of what we know of the 30s for you at all?
Yes the net is many times more a force for good and for amusement rather than evil and scaring but there’s a lot more scarey energy ‘invested’ in negativity than pos.
I had a days-long scrap on an American forum years ago in a convo about guns. There’s a widely-held belief there that a novel available on Amazon is a true story. It alleges that ‘we’ have imprisoned a man called Luty, who (so it goes) has written a book about his design of a DIY 9mm gun (the only size that’s not legal for easy purchase there). There were dozens of threads across many many forums and it transpired they’d started from Stormfront – not a place for afternoon tea ๐
However, off the abusive aspects of t’net and on to the amusing ones – it does hold treasures such as ‘Ultimate Dog Tease’ ๐
Hmmmmmmm ๐

For balance on what I said, I believe Manning was a vulnerable person when he joined the US armed forces, really, what with him being allegedly “in the closet”. But that just makes me more suspicious that he has been set up a bit by the dark shadows, somehow. But that is my observation, that could be discussed.
And with Andrea Davison you mentioned Gilliebc – read some stuff about it, and it also too looks all “spooky”, when she claims she is one, and all that. Looks like a lot of fun and games have been going on there too. These secret services do get their knickers in the twist, when what they get up to invariably ends up in chaos, doesn’t it?
Talking of Llanelli Alastair, Scarlets spin dried Leinster, reigning european champions, in rugger last night in their first home game, a thrashing old boy, the first league game of the season. A result that has raised eyebrows with those around the world that follow rugby, as at link here,
http://www.planetrugby.com/story/0,25883,3551_8042759,00.html
Young side on average Scarlets are, and they mashed Leinster – the man of the match for instance Alastair, Liam Williams at full back, is only 21 still, and played incredible, right out of the mould of JPR he was, even if he was only an apprentice scaffolder before becoming pro, and not a bone setter like JPR, but still, he has the rugger brain. Will go far.
I
too welcome any information that justifiably discredits organisations such as
the EDL. Which imo is anything but an ‘EDL’ It’s quite true of course that the
internet is used for bad reasons as well as good. But, having said that we
should be very careful of giving any group of people the power to censor and
regulate the internet. Not that we will be given any say in that! People should
be able to make up their own minds on any given topic. Surely you wouldn’t want
us to go the way of China or North Korea, where the internet is very heavily
controlled and censored. One man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter.
I certainly don’t want some group of people (any group) deciding what I can or
cannot read. So called neo-nazis are a very organised group when it comes to
using the internet. So if I can figure this out, than so can others. We should
all be able to retain the right to decide for ourselves.
Interesting post, Michele. Being an engineer and technician, oily spanner train driver steam engine-type most of my life, mostly self-educated, I could easily buy some kit off exchange and mart, buy the right diamond bits for my lathe, buy the required specification of metal, and churn out 9mm’s, IF I wanted too, but I don’t, I am more into how parts are churned out for old classic cars, more comforting for the conscience, unlike here, with the Jackel,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_PUIyUbXZoE
With true engineers, you name it, we can make it, but it will take a little time….., or get up to tricks like Charles Bronson here, even more….
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdmRcgjN1m0
: )
I think it’s entirely possible that Manning was set up. Particularly if he may be a vulnerable person. Whistle-blowers are a ‘nuisance’ for the PTB who throw everything at them in order to discredit their ‘revelations’ Some whistle-blowers are undoubtly self-aggrandizing trouble makers. Usually with an axe to grind. But people such as (serious spelling alert, coming up) Alexander Solcheinitsin and Mordichia Vanunu, the information they had to give was very important.
As I said in my post yesterday or the day before, I’m not sure which, if any category Andrea Davison, (the daughter of a late Conservative MP, allegedly) may or may not fall into. I take my hat off to genuine whistle-blowers. I don’t think I would be either brave or stupid enough to ever join their ranks. It’s fortunate for the rest of us that some are prepared to put their heads above the parapet, when necessary.
que?
Ah well.
might as well forget my post on the lack of rabodirect rugger reports in the Guardian/Observer then, it seems, since my comments are disappearing into the aether.
As an aside, anyone remember the english establishment supporting that nutter Hitler before WWII? Of course not, you are all dead. Good research that is found, most got off scot free after WWII, to live normal lives, going to Wimbledon tennis each year, work for the BBC, and all that bullshit, when they wouldn’t think twice of executing a coward in WWI with shell-shock, but in the lower ranks only.
The US always uses that against us, in sharp end diplomacy.
As here, in The Remains of the Day,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=426-XOKxhk8
A quite, how could I say, informative movie, when the authorities can’t keep things under their hat anymore, and pre-empted it. Just wait for more, from our “free-speaking” drama industries.
Yes but the scrap wasn’t about that Ehtch.
The scrap was about American gun-lobbyists pretending to believe that a fictional person had been incarcerated in UK for years on end on the pretext (by our Establishment) that he was insane.
The fact that the ‘data’ was from a novel, described as such on Amazon, had escaped them.
It was the subject of numerous threads. Who knows, perhaps there is such a person, one with a different name, enduring such imprisonment (but I doubt it’s merely down to his having made a gun).
The opinion of all those freedom-lurvin’ ‘libertarians’ was that UK citizens are willingly living some kind of restricted life … on the grounds of not owning as many (and as big) guns as they want…… d’uh.
Nope Gbc, of course I do not want ‘us to go the way of China or North Korea’.
Hence my ‘Restrictive – bad, humane restrictions – good (in my book)’ posted 2 days ago.
How to achieve the right balance will be a movable feast; the difficulty of implementing whatever Lord Leveson recommends for our Press will show the problem.
We had people a couple of weeks ago saying ‘everyone’s seen them on the internet already’ re the pics of PH.
Garbage. Anyone that had must have chosen to open a link but also must have had Bband to start with, that means NOT ‘every’body had seen them.
However, it’s telling that the excesses of the internet were used as an excuse for Print to ‘just’ do the same.
So which Big Brother are we allowing to change us when we say ‘No’ to some controls?
I like the freedom to feel trust, not the freedom to be force-fed crap (hence my unwillingness to believe in the proliferation of conspiracy theories we only find when we fall for everything spread so quickly on the web).
You might be losing in the same way I do H; the IPA-ID box is off-screen unless you scroll for it and if you don’t ‘clear’ yourself after a cookie-clearout yep, the ether is where it goes to.
It’s the likes of you, and your cronies, that have jeopardised the world and freedom of speech. The spin that you guys create to keep the working man in the dark whilst allowing dark forces to be used against them, is exactly the reason we need whistle blowing websites.
You fill the world with evil and breed fear, but it’s people like yourself that should be imprisoned, and that we should be fearful of.
For it’s people like you that condone the slaughter of millions of innocent people whilst you play power games for big business.
I am/was ashamed to call myself English because of the vileness that you and your so called Labour colleagues spread.
You’ve created a world of evil and fear, well done!
Weapons – Of – Mass – Destruction
at least Assange didn’t work for a war criminal
“Come the Revolution” people like you are going to need asylum somewhere outside the UK…..
You are a disgrace to your Country and the sympathies of the huge majority of its People.
Of course, we understand that you are blind to that.
But blindness will be no excuse come the War Crimes trials….
I don’t even know where to start with this article. Written as it has been by a man I would trust with nothing more than the responsibilities of a paper round. Assange is ,in all likelihood, not that afraid of extradition from Sweden to America, although looking at Sweden’s past on this subject he has every right to be so. I suspect that he thinks that in a country where, on the subject of rape (and where you actually have 3 different “levels” of rape) a man is guilty until proven innocent he won’t stand that much of a chance at a fair trial. Looking at the numbers of men incarcerated over the last few years as the laws have become more strange I can understand why. (I don’t need to express my deep felt hatred of rape in all its forms in order to be able to write on this subject but I will to prevent any ranting that may occur and waste valuable time and energy. Take a look at here if you are interested in more – http://justice4assange.com/Sexual-Offences.html). 4 years in a prison in Sweden will seriously hamper the work that Assange has done and should continue to do. A spell of time living in a South American Country with an interesting past will not hamper his work as much and I suspect and hope that he is thinking of the greater good. I can see no moment in the past where Mr Campbell has done the right thing and faced up to the war crimes that he has been involved in but I hope that one day someone will be strong enough to prosecute those crimes and that Mr Campbell can walk the walk that he so wonderfully accuses Mr Assange of failing to do so in this article.
Complete Rubbish. Go to the Hague. Go directly to the Hague. Do not pass go.
Rev.Tutu forgot to mention that the likes of you and Dick Cheney should also be tried for war crimes along with Blair and Bush!!
Mate, you and your mentor Blair should go to jail for the hundred of thousand of victims that you caused.
Hit piece. Campbell spins on …
Yeah, what he said below. You sir are an idiot Mr Campbell.
Bradley was shopped to the FBI by Adrian Lamo, nothing to do with Assange. The rabbit hole goes very deep in this case. Look at the bigger picture
Astonishingly pat. A valid point presented as the whole argument whilst ignoring the global issue. You exist in a dreamworld. Here in the real world, it’ll a take us a generation to clean up the stinking mess that you and your cronies created.
well said jayson , looks like campbell want’s back into politics to me. Ecuador and Mexico expelled the US ambassadors for good reasons , you can understand press censorship if they are pushing a US agenda . Assange stayed in Sweden 5 weeks answering the sex charges , he realised what was up and ran for it , all power to him . Campbell you sound jealous that he is in the lime light and that you are no match for him .
The biggest problem I have with the “Sweden versus Ecuador” discussion is the assumption that because Sweden has had a good record at times (often) in the past that it necessarily is on the right or preferred track today. The case presented by the Swedish prosecuting authority, as reported in the UK appeal court judgement, is so stretched as to have the look and feel of a political campaign rather than a sober juristic assessment of the facts. Whatever Sweden’s human rights record it seems clear that the “case against Assange” is being pursued for political rather than legal or ethical ends. If there is a proper case to answer then let’s see it presented on a factual basis, not on the basis of brinkmanship on the part of Marianne Ny. If Sweden was prepared to come to the UK and interview Assange there, and then lay formal charges (or drop the charges), then I would have a lot more sympathy for their position.
Others have rebutted your nonsense adequately.
Has it occurred to you that the light of publicity now being shone on the regime in Ecuador may rally world governments against it?
Michele, This thread seems to have drawn several new posters all of a sudden!
Re: the up and down arrows. I don’t know as yet how to identify who gave the likes or dislikes. I said I didn’t like the down arrow when it was introduced. As I said at the time, I thought it was childish and unnecessary. Simply ignoring posts we didn’t like or agree with was perfectly adequate before. There are a couple of posts on here today from a newbie/stranger which are abusive in a personal way. AC, I hope you are keeping a close eye on these strangers. We have no REPORT button to press. So please be extra careful when moderating what gets posted on this site.
The bottom line on the right to bear arms in the US is that they, TPTB are trying to dis-arm the people before the SHTF. Whether that’s a good or bad thing is debatable.
Given the astounding feat of 28 ‘Likes’ in 4hrs I wonder where you’ve ‘advertised’ your post?
I believe it’s possible to be logged out and ‘Like’ as a guest ad infinitum though !
‘slaughter of millions’ – been at the plonk?
Do try to stick to facts, such matters are way too serious for cheap opining / hitting and runnig ๐
Yes it’s such a shame that the sanctions were stopped and profiteering businesses had to find other markets isn’t it?
Let me understand this.
YOU think that because YOU think Assange is some sort of god he should be allowed to get away with using TWO women like so much Kleenex?
Wow, how many more should he have been allowed to so use before having the rights of women explained to him?
Have I understood you properly?
It’s Latin pet, spell it properly if you want to exploit it.
Wow, I think I’ve got me a troll (or twoll).
Can victims ‘drop’ charges for criminal acts?
Whatevery you consider the salient details it’s clear we differ, you have the same rights to your crap opinion as I have in what you believe to be mine.
There is NO way to smother this incontinent person’s behaviour.
He did not inform the women that he was not using protection , he did not treat them as humans, he did treat them as vessels.
Breathtaking ??? The sudden arrival of a bunch of group-thinking Ass supporters. All whipped and frothed up and sooooo bwave.
We are Anonymous,We are legion,We do not forgive,We do not forget,Expect us.
Dropped ‘rape’ charges btw, just as so many other women have and always will.
Have they dropped ‘sexual assault’ – surely you have the gen on that?
It’s a tawdry tawdry shoddy situation and the women must be even more embarrassed than many others have been, that is NOT a reason to ignore the selfish overgrown child’s use of them as if they were there only for his relief.
I don’t think anyone has suggested Assange shopped Manning.
If only there were some sort of technology that would allow Swedish prosecutors to travel to London to interview Assange! Or some sort of remote communication device, that would enable them to speak with him without even leaving Sweden! Then this whole thing could be over…but unfortunately, I can’t think of any way for Assange to be interviewed without going to Sweden himself.

Basically, my post was on about rugger from Llanelli, but it disappeared – no doubt finger trouble by myself.
Anyway Alastair, have a look at this, five minutes of highlights from the thrashing of Leinster, the euro champs, from last Saturday evening, and have a look at Aaron Shingler, the flank forward, who used to bowl for Glamorgan before he turned rugby pro, rampant run down the field sidestepping backs for the fourth try, at beeb link here,

As I did say, young side that are doing things, Fergie early Manc U style!
We all know you speak for the Rothschilds…hence your usefulness has passed for the dying power “elites!”
Oh dear, I sense a, what do they call it again, ah yes, a tory-right flashmob attack. How droll!
Talking about flash mob, how about this one from Singapore, you lot? It’s quite popular there, so go there,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrTf6anF0r8
Political school term has started, I sense, yes, and time to checkout who is this years school bullies to try and avoid, and all that. Am I right, tory-right?
Don’t worry Michele, any publicity is good publicity, and I can see through these lot as clear as any clear day. Could be CIA though?…. NOOOO!
O-O
Yes, agreed there Michele – ” freedom-lurvin’ ‘libertarians’ “.
They love to live in a free country, but when actions are done to defend it, they bury their heads or squeal, and don’t never ever want to get their hands dirty.
Tutu needs some lessons in what actually was going on, underground. OK, so it became self-perpetuating, but were we going to stand back and do nothing? The lowerside of Manhatten was demolished for fucks sakes, but god knows what was going on in the background before, from both sides.
Lower Manhatten reminds me of this song, dark, but different, from Greece clever ladies, of all places…

Patricia Neal, who was married to Roald Dahl, of James and his Giant Peach fame, her going up a construction lift in NYC to meet Gary Cooper at the top, eventually, is the classic bit clip of that. As well as the long arms of wotsername from the Green Wing NHS comedy, she always makes me laugh – what is her name again, she’s scottish by the way, if that helps?
Whether Correa “profits” in this case is completely irrelevant. What is relevant, that Assange is “hiding away from a country whose media and war policies Wikileaks AND ALL BONA FIDE MEDIA should be exposing”.
Shame on you.
And you’re not going on about Clint Eastwood’s Charlton Heston’s ” from my cold dead hands” -type speech to the Reps from last week, are you? Charlton, as here, more or less,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORYVCML8xeE
Yeh – EEEEE-HARRRHH urgh, flip, from my slow hand……… mother!
You are SO being manipulated. Probably you don’t want to now the truth (nice link below).
– he is not charged with anything
– witnesses (the women) dropped their statements when they saw what the police made of them or how they where used
– he has been available in Sweden for 5 weeks for interrogation but they didn’t call him
– he was free to leave to UK
– then they issued an arrest warrant (they could have interrogated him while he was waiting for them to interrogate them)
– Swedish police often interrogates people in other countries (so why not in UK)
So he is arrested without any charges. One of the “victims” is still a personal friend. It is a setup.
But probably: you don’t want to know and sleep on with what the mainstream media tell you.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/aug/23/women-against-rape-julian-assange
You’re so right! Can I have a copy of the dossier you are so proud of? Why don’t you and TB tiptoe off to the dogging bushes of politics and die fellating one another?
cahn, that is all you need to know when you tory right go to Sing, just say cahn do to everything.
Got connections there, so I will be watching you lot….
Sexual assault is sexual assault.
NB: I did not use the word rape; who did so first? Our media or Sweden’s? Unfortunate if either country’s Police – or not?
I have not said the Ass has been charged, nor that he should be. Unnerstand?
Women often drop allegations (note: NO charges have existed).
They do so out of embarrassment and there are several reasons for it in these cases.
Hero worship that got burst like a bubble.
Workplace affairs.
PDQ after meeting = embarrassment
It’s very possible both women were enjoying and participating in the Ass’s choice of wake-up call ๐
They had probably been told he was protected, perhaps they hadn’t and simply assumed it and found out too late that they were wrong.
There’s an inequality in both cases.
Both women had provided protection before sleep, had demonstrated their responsibility, had let Ass know they were safe ‘for’ him.
He, however, doubtless without a care for his own responsibility ‘for’ them had them both without protection.
I don’t know the legalities, I’m sure his selfishness constitutes sexual assaultS.
I doubt that ‘rape’ would be considered unless he either lied to them beforehand or told them the truth and forced things.
As we all keep saying, it’s tawdry and a shame but his selfish deeds and his obvious low valuation of both women is saddening.
Ooooh a visitation from one of L Mensch’s Starbuck (et al) customers xxx
Most of the public can see Julian Assange’s integrity and are only too grateful that at least Wikileaks is interested in shining a light on tyranny and corruption. You, on the other hand, are widely seen as mediocre, mendacious, insignificant and without principle.
Integrity is about doing something courageous even if it’s not in your interest because you believe it’s right. Ever done that?
Bugger it, for our tory friends, to make them wet, Canarby Street and Joe 90, the illcuturals they are, that need streetwise educating, away from their backrooms. Don’t care which leg you kick with, I will follow it with blokes, after,

Life Chez dan must be gracious indeed :-s
Can’t say I don’t wade in when needed, ey Alastair. It baffles me I am still alive, but this online battling, I find, seems quite safe.

AC, It seems to me that something has gone wrong with your pre or anti-moderating system when two posts of an unpleasant and personal nature have made it onto this thread.
I’m not impressed by this Disqus upgrade. There is no facility to report inappropriate/abusive posts. Which should never have appeared in the first place! Also, I do not like the arrow-down feature. It is childish and unnecessary imo. Please get Disqus to sort it out. Thank you.
You get a little bit of credit for not being easily trollable, but your opinions are really awful. Why all the resentment for Assange?
You know those vile Swedish Feminists are dishonest, and what they’re accusing him of is insignificant in any case.
Without getting into the sordid details of the charges against him (they are properly for the court he should face) my feeling is that Assange is more worried about these than exradition to the US.
As I understand it if he were to be extradited to Sweden onward extraditonnto the US would mean both Sweden and the UK would have to agree. However compliant both Swedeb and the UK may be vis a vis US extradtion demands simple commmon sense suggests that it must be more likely (if only slightly) that he would escsape onward extradition if two countries have to agree tha one – complex legal systems, labrynthine appeal procedures etc. I see there is a post below saying he couldn’t be extardited from the UK becasue of fear of torture – sorry, there are precedents for extradtion to the US form the UK.
No – it must be the sex llegations Assange fears. The stuff about the US is simply a desperate attempt to further ingratiate himself with those who will excuse anything however immoral or disgusting so long as it is anti US.
Oh my, thank you kind sir/madam.
I don’t resent Assange personally but do resent his inefficiency with Wiki and his cowardice and find his continuing hysteria embarrassing (as in For All Mankind) just as is the Ecuadorians’ extrapolation of Hague’s definition of embassy status.
I don’t agree with your ‘insignificant’ but I’m also not going to get in to a biological explanation of what is repellant about what this wannabe-person has done TO near-strangers.
Does it really have to be stated yet again that it was the attendance by both women for STD tests and their giving the same name for the partner that would have to be contacted for the same test (for the very reason of his safety-testing too) that led to this becoming the serious matter that it is?
You clearly don’t appreciate women’s rights (to give informed consent) or equality (in how to share their body).
Goodbye.

Dang – the other version used to keep a part-written post if I got interrupted …..
Just a couple of days ago you were worrying about Big Brother and cyber restriction Gbc!
I think it’s funny how they all arrive in a blob and wonder how they organise themselves, do they dress up and keep scrap books of ‘campaigns’ ? ๐

Arms trained myself, but it always makes me laugh when they point and shoot and nothing happens, when they have no conception of a safety catch on is. Quite amusing it is. Everyone should have a go at an armed weapon, slug down the barrel, I think, for modern day general education purposes.

Ah yes, Michelle Gomez (!?!), from Glasgie. Seems her muvver got around. : ) Still, she has that slippery body, and cheekbones you can cut cheese with, that does stir me, loins-like, and she makes me laugh, which is a bonus, I suppose,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzojgwpqiwQ
More Michelle here, if, like me, you can’t get enough,

Yes, Michelle taking a pish in the gents, as she does.
That beeb news presenter, Fiona Bruce, is a Singaporian, and has some Malay blood in her, as you can tell, by the eyes. I like her, but it does worry me she has puppet strings as well, as you have to, when licking up the higher echelons of the beeb, for promotion and wages and such.
Couple of clips of her here – scatch the surface and she is alright, I think, but Antiques Roadshow sends me to sleep, though, much too much comfortable it is, unlike those old seats thay have turning up in it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJfSS0ZXYdo
Fiona singing, if you can call it that, and showing her cross-continent legs,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcMSTKbHkbA
Daddy porn it is, that last one. Behave, Jezza Clarkson!
Fiona certainly looks like something out of Orchard Towers in Sing there, four floors of, cough!, ladies. Been there a few times, but just for cultural discovery reasons, honest, super honest!
…and don’t listen to that marvellous dutch extract five foot nine Brunei Malay lady, we just talked through the night, honest…
And she WAS female by the way, I checked, as you do…
